Huwaila Ibrahim Muhammad is a seasoned Private Legal Practitioner with over 20years experience. She is a Child Protection Expert, and a Gender and Development Specialist. She holds LL.B Hons, BL, Masters in Business and Commercial Law (MBCL) and Masters in Legislative Drafting (MLD). She worked as a counsel in many firms and eventually established her Law Firm “HMI Legal Consult”. She published articles on newspapers about the rights of women and children. She served as the Secretary and eventually became the Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Kano State Branch.
She is currently the Welfare Committee Head of the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF), Chairperson Observatory Committee on Violence against Women and Girls (OBSTEC), Chairperson of the Coalition against Rape and Violence (CARAV), Member of Women Peace and Security Network (WPS), Member Kano State Civil Society Forum (KCSF), Chairperson NBA Kano Branch Law Week Committee, Member NBA 2022 Electoral Appeals Committee, Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (FICMC).
She is one of the founding Directors at Green Horizon, a Law and Development Consultancy Firm. She was part of the team that developed the Alternative Dispute Resolution manual for the J4A a DFID funded program, she trained traditional title holders and paralegals in Dutse, Jigawa State and the Northeast with the ADR manual. She also led a team of Green Horizon consultants that evaluated the Jigawa State Community Law Centres and trained its staff on Law, Human Rights and ADR under J4A CIP 4 support.
She participated in the Domestication of the National Gender Policy in Jigawa State. She is the Lead Consultant for Strengthening State Community action to address Gender based Violence in Adamawa and Kano State under the Women Right Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), supported by RoLac a British Council/EU funded program. Lead Consultant for Strengthening State Community action to address Gender based Violence in Adamawa and Kano State under the Women Right Advancement and Protection Alternative, supported by RoLac. Lead Consultant, Coordinated the establishment and operation of additional channels/access Points for SGBV victims under the Women Rights protection and alternative (Wrapa) supported by RoLac. Lead Consultant for the support of CSO’s and media for the implementation of key justice reform provisions of the ACJL in Kano and Jigawa state supported by RoLAC.
Lead Consultant for the incorporation of the VAPP Bill in to the Kano State Penal Code supported by RoLac. Member Validation Committee of the Rules of ACJL to Improve Speedy Dispensation of Corruption Cases, Member Drafting Committee of Kano State Muslim Code of Personal Status, Member Validation Committee of the Kano State Child Protection Bill. She has litigated over 100 cases of rape and violence against women and girls.
